"The Apostle's Creed"
THE APOSTLE'S CREED
"I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son, our Lord;
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, Born of the virgin Mary;
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, dead, and buried;
He descended into hell.
The third day He arose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven; And sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit;
The holy catholic church;
the communion of saints;
The forgiveness of sins;
The resurrection of the body;
And the life everlasting. Amen."

Bible Passage
John 18:28-40 (ESV - English Standard Version)
John 18:28-40 (ESV - English Standard Version)
28Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the governor's headquarters. It was early morning. They themselves did not enter the governor's headquarters, so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover.
29So Pilate went outside to them and said, "What accusation do you bring against this man?"
30They answered him, "If this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you."
31Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law." The Jews said to him, "It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death."
32This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to show by what kind of death he was going to die.
33So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, "Are you the King of the Jews?"
34Jesus answered, "Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?"
35Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?"
36Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world."
37Then Pilate said to him, "So you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice."
38Pilate said to him, "What is truth?" After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, "I find no guilt in him.
39But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?"
40They cried out again, "Not this man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a robber.

John 19:1-16 (ESV - English Standard Version)
John 19:1-16 (ESV - English Standard Version)
1Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged him.
2And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and arrayed him in a purple robe.
3They came up to him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" and struck him with their hands.
4Pilate went out again and said to them, "See, I am bringing him out to you that you may know that I find no guilt in him."
5So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, "Behold the man!"
6When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, "Crucify him, crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no guilt in him."
7The Jews answered him, "We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God."
8When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid.
9He entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus, "Where are you from?" But Jesus gave him no answer.
10So Pilate said to him, "You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?"
11Jesus answered him, "You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin."
12From then on Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, "If you release this man, you are not Caesar's friend. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar."
13So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic Gabbatha.
14Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, "Behold your King!"
15They cried out, "Away with him, away with him, crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your King?" The chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar."
16So he delivered him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus,

Suffered Under Pontius Pilate
Explanation
Jesus suffered UNDER Pontius Pilate
He was sent to Pilate
"No fault in him"
Pilate sends Jesus to Herod
Herod wants him to do miracles for him
Wants him to put on a show...
He doesn't care for Jesus or about His situation
Jesus doesn't even answer Herod.
Stays silent
Sometimes we need to just be silent
"Do not answer a fool according to his folly or you yourself will be like him." Proverbs 26:4
Herod writes Jesus off as an idiot and sends Him back to Pilate
Pilate is in a bad situation
He knows Jesus is innocent, but he cannot allow an uprising or he will answer to Caesar...
Jesus suffered terrible pain...mind, body and soul...suffering that will make what we endure seem shallow
Although, that does not diminish how we feel during our suffering
Our sufferings PRODUCE PROGRESS towards Christ
Christ has handed us a position and a place at his table, but you can't FILL THE POSITION WITHOUT PREPARATION!!
If we are following Jesus, we will endure suffering as well.
Bible Passage
Romans 5:1-11 (ESV - English Standard Version)
Romans 5:1-11 (ESV - English Standard Version)
1Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
2Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
3Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance,
4and endurance produces character, and character produces hope,
5and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
6For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.
7For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die—
8but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
9Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.
10For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.
11More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
Application
Jesus, through His suffering under Pontius Pilate, has taken the suffering that WE DESERVED as the enemies of God.
He has reconciled us to Himself
Peace has come through suffering
God is making us into the image of His Son
Jesus suffered
We will suffer too
Jesus says "you will be hated by all nations for my names sake."
Jesus went through sorrows of:
being alone
losing close friends though death = Lazarus
being accused of every sin you can imagine. YOUR SIN. MY SIN.
If we are being made into the image of Christ, WE WILL SUFFER.
Somehow, we have believed, to many different degrees, that somehow we get to escape suffering...
THIS is an AMERICAN concept a Prosperity Gospel concept, a WOF concept, that has crept into the Church...
"If you only have enough faith"
"Declare and decree"
"Name it and claim it"
"Blab it and grab it"
"Sow a seed"
Why didn't the Apostle's do this?? They could've saved their own lives...had they only had MORE FAITH...

Was Crucified, Dead, and Buried
Explanation
Jesus was Crucified for our sin.
He BECAME your INSECURITY
He BECAME your SELF-CENTEREDNESS
Application
Jesus nails all of our sin on the cross.
because He BECAME our sin.
He was nailed to the cross that WE DESERVED
If Jesus nailed our sin on the cross, we need to be like Him in the way of keeping it nailed on the cross.
Wake up and remember what you are without Christ...HOPELESS
Remember that you don't HAVE to walk in the flesh...JESUS IS OUR HOPE
Pray in humility and love and worship to the Father asking Him to fill you and prepare your heart for what lies ahead.
Conclusion
So, Christ through His suffering under Pontius Pilate:
Crucified
Dead
Buried
Put our sin to death, by laying down His life.
He absorbed our death. He absorbed our wrath.
Jesus came to save us:
FROM HIMSELF
FOR HIMSELF
BY HIMSELF
Let's follow Our King in Humility and Love to the ends of the earth!
